The vision that some people have of Dartmoor National Park being a wild and desolate place, with few residents and even fewer buildings, is only partially accurate. Yes, it can be wild and desolate, and some parts of it are only just accessible, but there are still plenty of communities, from medium sized towns to compact little hamlets, providing a broad offering of great places to use as your base whilst you explore this magnificent national park, and all of them have a diverse array of accommodation choice.
Some of Devon’s finest hotels are located, sometimes in their own beautiful grounds, on Dartmoor, then there are a good deal of inns and bed and breakfasts too. There are campsites, camping barns and self-catering cottages, and its noteworthy that for the truly adventurous, this is the only place in England where wild camping is permitted. Please note that there are strict guidelines about wild camping that must be adhered to, as well as specific areas where it can be done – byelaws relating to visitor behaviour on Dartmoor can be found here.
