It has a healthy share of Michelin-starred restaurants, putting it firmly on the gourmet map, and no shortage of elegant tea rooms and buzzy little cafés. York hasn’t missed out on the food truck scene and there are various excellent options to choose from while you’re on the move and seeing the sights.

And then, of course, there are the pubs. With Yorkshire’s long history of brewing, it’s almost rude not to cross the threshold of a traditional ale house to sample a pint. York is teeming with cosy pubs serving local ale, beer and all manner of other hop-based beverages and locally produced spirits. Several of York’s pubs are centuries old, so throw into the mix fascinating pasts and ghostly tales (which the publican or the locals will often gladly share with you), and you have a wonderfully entertaining experience.
